One more for Morikawa
Plus: Crushers take team title
âOne more.â
Itâs currently my two-year oldâs favorite phrase. And surely, for Collin Morikawa, itâs music to his ears.
On Sunday, Morikawa got âone moreâ after shooting a final round 63 to end his two-year winless streak and secure the Zozo Championship in Japan. The twenty-six year old now has six wins on Tour, including, of course, two majors.
âIt wasn't like I didn't believe I was going to have another win,â he said after his round. âIt was just more about when it was going to happen, right?â
Morikawa led after day one, but struggled (as many players did) in the windy conditions on Friday. He opened his third round 3-over through four holes, but heated up from there to finish 4-under for the day and two shots behind the leader (Justin Suh) heading into Sunday. His final round 63 was the lowest score by any golfer all week.
âIt feels incredible,â said Morikawa, who ended up winning by six. âEvery win's so different, and every experience, whether it's winning or losing, you learn a lot, but this one just meant the world.â
Morikawaâs long-awaited victory (he had ten top 6 finishes since his last win!) continued a trend of big name champs this fall season, PGA Tour writer Sean Martin pointed out. Tom Kim repeating at the Shriners last week and Sahith Theegala winning for the first time in Napa were the two others.
As Martin put it: âFall golf delivers.â
Nickâs picks (graded)
Another week, another chance at 4-0 perfection. But, alas, I wagered against Min Woo.
Hereâs how my best bets turned outâŚ
â Beau Hossler top 20 (+130): The visor did travel well to Japan and Hossler easily covered here, finishing in a tie for second place. Still, the solid performance may be a little disappointing for Hossler, who was one shot off the 54-hole lead but couldnât keep up with a red-hot Morikawa on Sunday. His search for a PGA Tour win continues.
â Keegan Bradley over Rickie Fowler (+100): Keegan wasnât spectacular this week (-1, T19), but Rickie was bad (+7, T64). Itâs something to keep an eye on â whether Rickieâs play falls off yet again after his comeback (and win!) earlier this year.
â Cam Davis top Australian (+180): This had stay-away written all over it. Davis was very decent this week (-4, T12), but fellow Aussie Min Woo Lee got the best of him on Sunday, firing a final round 65 to finish -6 (T6). With his performance, the soaring Min Woo has almost certainly secured his PGA Tour card for next season.
â Collin Morikawa, outright winner (12-1): đ°đ°đ°

Thatâs all for today! Thanks for reading yâall. As a heads up, thereâs no PGA Tour event this week, so Iâll skip the Wednesday preview. But expect something special in your inboxes on Friday.
Have a great week and talk soon! Nick B.
